I am about to embark on the trip of a lifetime! I arrived in Edmonton, Alberta on late Monday night May 28th, local time, where I was met by Dawn Wilson from Miller Wilson Angus. After attending a Farmfair meeting the next day (as Dawn is on the committee), we headed back to the Miller Wilson herd. They run a 100 head Black Angus herd and do an extensive embryo transfer program each year. What an awesome mob of cattle! We had a walk around a couple of mobs of cows that afternoon, one group of which was being bred to DMM Roar 16X, a son of HF Tiger 5T. The other group of cows was being bred to DMM Bubba 2Y, whose dam DMM Miss Essence 61W, was Supreme Grand Champion Female at Farmfair 2011 with 2Y at foot, and winner of a Dodge truck! The next few days were spent tagging calves and then taking them to summer pastures, where we also put out a loose mineral lick. The calves were tagged with an electronic identification device, much the same as the NLIS system used in Australia, which is a must before moving cattle off their home property. They were also split into groups of cows with bull calves and cows with heifer calves. Make sure you click on the link for Miller Wilson Angus and check out their cattle!
